DUBOIS – A Treasure Lake man accused of threatening his family with a knife waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday during Centralized Court.
Matthew David Kairys, 23, 12634 Treasure Lake Rd., 269 Treasure Lake, DuBois, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and terroristic threats. His bail was lowered from $10,000, monetary to $10,000, unsecured.
The charges stem from an incident at his residence on Dec. 28, 2012. According to the affidavit of probable cause, officers were called to Kairys’s residence by Treasure Lake Security. Kairys’ father told them that the accused had a drinking problem and had recently signed himself out a rehabilitation center.
That night the victim and his wife were awakened by Kairys making noise in the kitchen. When they walked into the kitchen, they saw two bottles of cough syrup and a full bottle of vodka. He began arguing with his parents about his drinking and poured the vodka down the drain. He then grabbed a kitchen knife, pointed it at his father and threatened to kill him. He swung the knife and knocked over a paper towel holder.
After he put the knife back on the counter, he ripped up a leaf from a flower, saying that was his father. Next he disconnected the home phone from the wall. He continued to act oddly before going upstairs to his bedroom.
Officers entered the accused’s bedroom, where they saw him lying on boxes next to the bed. He began to argue with officers regarding simple things like his name. When he was advised that he was under arrest, he became aggressive and uncooperative, but eventually he was handcuffed and taken to DuBois Regional Medical Center for an evaluation.
While he was being transported, he began to ramble about a laptop computer he wanted destroyed. He stated numerous times that he wanted the officers to kill him because the information on the computer was very important. He claimed if the information got out, he would be dead anyway.
