CLEARFIELD – Three DuBois men accused of robbing a man in his home were sentenced recently in Clearfield County Court.

The trio was charged with entering a trailer in Sandy Township on Aug. 27 and holding a man at knifepoint before forcing him to open a safe. They escaped with money, knives and prescription drugs.

Jeanmal McPhee, 19, Wilson Ave., DuBois, Mackenzie A. Carlson, 19, 602 Locust St., DuBois, and Roderick Joe Gregory Jr., 23, 254 N. Wood Ave., DuBois, pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy/robbery, theft by unlawful taking, and simple assault before Judge Paul E. Cherry.

McPhee, who also pleaded guilty to an additional charge of prohibited offensive weapon, was sentenced Friday to 12 months to three years in state prison.

Gregory was sentenced Thursday to 18 months to four years in state prison.

Carlson was sentenced Thursday to six months to two years less one day in the county jail and five years consecutive probation. Before he was sentenced, Cherry told him it was his lucky day and warned him if he came back into court for a probation violation, he would go to state prison.

When asked if he wanted to say anything, Carlson said “I am very truly sorry for the things I’ve done.”

All three men must attend anger management counseling, submit to DNA testing at a cost of $250 and pay $100 in restitution to the victim.

According to the affidavits of probable cause, police responded to a robbery report and spoke with the victim. He said he thought he was going to be seriously or fatally injured during the altercation.

He explained he was at his trailer when two black males and one white male entered his home. All three had knives and were wearing masks to hide their identities.

One of the actors held a knife to his throat while the other two rummaged through his possessions. They used physical force and threatened to kill him if he didn’t open his safe. After he opened it, they took $400 in cash, six knives, prescription drugs and two packs of cigarettes. They then fled on foot.

The victim said he thought he was set up because about half an hour prior to the men entering his property, he received a phone call from a female acquaintance. The female juvenile asked him if he would pick her and her friend up at Snappy’s.

He then traveled to Snappy’s, picked them up and returned to his trailer. He thought it was suspicious that the girl was texting someone while the other female stood outside the trailer. Both girls fled the scene with the three men.

While police canvassed the area, they saw two individuals who matched the descriptions given by the victim. When the officers approached this man and juvenile girl, they dropped several items and tried to hide behind a tree.

One of the officers found three knives lying on the ground. Both individuals were detained and searched. The man, later identified as McPhee had three additional knives. Five of these six knives were later identified by the victim as the ones taken from his trailer. The sixth knife was the one they used to threaten him.

A witness told police that he and his girlfriend went with Carlson to visit with Gregory. McPhee and two juvenile girls were also at the house. McPhee and one of the juvenile girls told everyone they had a plan to set up a guy and take his drugs and money.

The plan was for the girl to make a sexual offering to the victim so he would take her to his trailer. While there she would locate the drugs and money and then text message Gregory, Carlson and McPhee when they could enter. The witness said arrangements were made between the girl and the victim to meet at Snappy’s.

The mother of the second juvenile female provided police with text messages between the first girl and McPhee in which they communicated and arranged for McPhee, Gregory and Carlson to enter the trailer and commit the crimes. This girl confirmed it was McPhee, Gregory and Carlson who entered the trailer.

Snedden Requests and Gets State Prison for Trying to Ignite Fire at Sheetz

CLEARFIELD – A DuBois woman accused of trying to ignite a fire at a Sheetz store was sentenced to state prison at her own request Friday in Clearfield County Court.

Andrea Joyce Snedden, 50, 214 Dixon Ave., DuBois, an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to arson, risking a catastrophe, three counts of recklessly endangering another person and summary charges of public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. Judge Paul Cherry sentenced her to nine months to three years in state prison.

Prior to sentencing her attorney, Curtis Irwin told the court that she was requesting a state prison sentence because she thinks she will get better mental health treatment there.

Snedden spoke on her own behalf apologizing to everyone. She explained that at that time, she was intoxicated and had no intention of causing anyone bodily harm because that is “not in my nature.” She stated that at state prison she could possibly get to the root of her problem so that she could return to the community as a “cured person.”

Cherry commented that because there were people around her at the pumps, this could have been worse. “I hope you get the help you are requesting,” Cherry said.

The charges stem from an incident Aug. 17 in DuBois at the Sheetz store on North Brady Street when she sprayed gasoline all over the parking lot and tried to light it with a cigarette.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the assistant manager explained to police that a woman later identified as Snedden came into the store with a lit cigarette and was blowing smoke in her face and in the direction of customers. Snedden was told she needed to leave the store because she was not allowed to smoke there.

Snedden paid for $5 worth of gas and left the store. She walked toward a vehicle parked at pump No. 3 and turned that pump on. After a couple of moments the employee noticed the vehicle leaving that pump. Snedden was still standing in the middle of the gas pump island with a lit cigarette.

The employee walked outside and asked Snedden if she got her gas. Snedden advised her she needed to turn on pump No. 6. The employee, believing Snedden was filling up a gas can, went back into the store and turned on pump No. 6.

Once she did this, she noticed Snedden walk around the pump with her lit cigarette. As the employee walked back out to see if Snedden needed any help, she saw Snedden use the nozzle on the pump to spray gasoline all over the ground while she continued to smoke her cigarette. The employee ran back inside the store and told other employees.

Another employee ran outside and saw the gasoline that now had a lit cigarette in it, pouring down the parking lot.  At this point, Snedden no longer had a cigarette in her hand. The employee got fluid stoppers and kitty litter to prevent the gasoline from going any further into the lot. Snedden lit up another cigarette as she was standing right next to the spilled gasoline and the pumps.

The employee got her away from there and asked what she was doing. “See it isn’t real gas or it would have lit up,” she replied.

When police spoke with all of the employees involved, they were scared, shaken and nervous because they thought she was going to blow the store up.

A witness confirmed that Snedden poured the gasoline in the lot and then threw her cigarette into it.

The assistant manager said Snedden was lying on a stone wall behind the building. When police asked what she was doing lying on the wall, she replied “disturbing the peace.” She was smoking the same kind of cigarette the officer had seen in a puddle of gasoline in the parking lot.

As they talked with her they were able to detect an odor of alcohol and noticed she was slurring her words. They took her into custody.

She admitted that she poured the gasoline into the lot and put her cigarette into it. She stated she wanted to prove it would not light on fire.

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield woman accused of making synthetic marijuana and methamphetamines pleaded guilty Friday during plea and sentencing court before Judge Paul E. Cherry.

Amber Renee Dick, 35, 615 W. Front St., Clearfield, an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession with intent to manufacture or distribute a designer drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children. She was sentenced to nine months to three years in state prison.

Her probation on a previous criminal conspiracy/possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance case was revoked. For this she was sentenced to 90 days to three years in state prison. Her new sentence will run consecutive to this sentence giving her a total time of one to six years in prison.

Her attorney, Curtis Irwin, noted that she was sent to state prison for an evaluation for the Intermediate Punishment Program in August, but she decided she did not want to participate in that program. In October he filed a motion for reconsideration of sentence leading to her appearing in sentencing court again.

Prior to sentencing, Irwin did ask Cherry to consider making the two sentences concurrent with each other because the revocation was based on the new charges.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, probation officers received information in March that Dick, who is on probation, was manufacturing methamphetamines and K2 or synthetic marijuana at her home.

Police were advised that Dick’s 16-year-old son was also in the home and that she possibly possessed weapons. Officers stood by as the probation officials searched the residence and Dick submitted to a drug test.

Dick was taken into custody and transported to the jail for violating her probation. In an interview with police, Dick admitted to mixing substances to manufacture K2.

A lab report on the items determined there were traces of a synthetic cannabinoid in a pipe, a bag contained synthetic cannabinoid weighing 12.80 grams, residue found in a long glass tube was methamphetamine, five small bags contained 70.59 grams total of synthetic cannabinoid, and residue in a multi-colored tube was methamphetamine, as well as dihydrocodeinone and acetaminophen. Substances used to make K2 were also recovered.

Man Waives Charges for Allegedly Selling Firearm to 18-year-old

DUBOIS – A Penfield man accused of selling an 18-year-old a firearm waived his right to a preliminary hearing recently during Centralized Court held in District Judge Patrick Ford’s office.

John James Drum, 45, 5091 Mountain Run Rd., Penfield, is charged with conspiracy/firearm ownership and firearm ownership. He is free on $2,500, bail.

The teen he sold the gun to, Austin Donald Steele, 19, 5890 Westville Rd., Brockway, was facing similar charges but these charges were withdrawn at his preliminary hearing. He pleaded guilty to a summary disorderly conduct charge. Steele must pay $461 in fines and costs.

The charges stem from an incident in early July when Drum allegedly sold Steele a firearm.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, a trooper interviewed Steele at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in DuBois on July 21. Steele said he purchased a bersa thunder .380 ACP pistol from Drum at the Boy Scott camp.

Earlier that week, Drum made it known that he wanted to sell the gun. Steele told him he was interested in buying it. Steele allegedly met with Drum alone and made the exchange. Steele paid Drum $275 partially in cash and partially by check.

Steele allegedly told him he was only 18 years old at the time, and they would have to wait a few years to do the paperwork. Drum told Steele that would be OK. He told Steele that he trusted him and that he wouldn’t do anything stupid.

A witness told police in an interview that Steele had brought the pistol to his house to do some target shooting. Steele told him he bought it from Drum at the Boy Scout camp for $275.

When Drum was questioned by police, he stated he did not know Steele was only 18 years old. A few weeks prior to the sale, state police came to the camp due to a man threatening suicide.

Drum asked the camp staff if they were legal to carry a firearm to help patrol the property. Steele allegedly stepped forward so he gave him the gun to carry on patrol that night.

Later in the week, Drum decided to sell the gun and mentioned it to a few staff members. That afternoon, Steele told him he was interested in buying the gun. Drum said he checked on the price and told Steele he wanted $275 for it.

When they exchanged the money and the gun, Steele allegedly told him he did not have the money to get it transferred and asked if they could do it at a later date. Drum agreed thinking Steele would have the money in a few weeks when he got paid. Drum stated he had Steele sign a private firearm sale form indicating he was legal to purchase the firearm. He said he didn’t know Steele was only 18 until the officer told him.

On July 22 the trooper interviewed Steele again. He was asked if he stepped forward at the camp indicating he was legal to carry a gun the night that a man was threatening suicide.

Steele confirmed that he did; however, later in the week when they discussed the sale of the gun, he told Drum he was only 18. Drum told him he wasn’t concerned and they could transfer the gun when he turned 21 years old.

He was asked if there was any other time they had a conversation about his age. Steele said they were counting tents when they had a general conversation about him recently graduating.

Drum was contacted again about taking a polygraph test but Drum said he was unsure if he wanted to take it. He said his wife knew Steele’s age because he graduated from high school with their nephew. She yelled at him for not remembering. The trooper asked if it was possible Drum told him his age and he did not hear it. Drum agreed that was possible.

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man accused of attempting to flee and elude police waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during Centralized Court at the Clearfield County Jail.

Jarred David Peters, 23, of Clearfield has been charged with unlawful restraint of minor/not parent – risk of bodily injury; fleeing or attempting to elude an officer and recklessly endangering another person. Bail has been set at $25,000 monetary.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Dec. 16 Lawrence Township police were assisting state parole agent, Keith Summerson, with intercepting Peters in or around the High Street area. A township officer was parked in an unmarked unit on Byers Street and waited for contact from Summerson or to observe Peters.

The officer observed Peters, who was driving a 2003 green Ford Focus with Pennsylvania registration. Peters traveled down Hill Street and allegedly failed to stop at a posted sign while Summerson was following in a vehicle behind him. The officer activated the unmarked patrol unit’s overhead emergency lights and the state parole agent moved out of the way.

The officer allegedly observed Peters turn right onto Woodland Road without signaling. He allegedly continued to travel until turning right onto Wrigley Street without signaling. The officer attempted to keep up with Peters at a safe speed on Wrigley Street. At the top of Wrigley Street, the officer allegedly observed Peters fail to stop at the posted sign and turn left onto Firetower Road without signaling.

The officer continued to follow Peters on Firetower Road, where he allegedly passed and maneuvered around two vehicles. At this point in the pursuit, the officer indicated he was traveling at 86 miles per hour to keep up with the Peters vehicle. The officer allegedly observed Peters fail to stop at a posted sign and turn left without signaling onto Route 153 toward Houtzdale.

The officer allegedly observed Peters cut in front of two oncoming vehicles that were traveling in each direction. The officer stated in the affidavit that the three vehicles almost collided; the other two vehicles had to stop in the intersection. The officer said he had to activate his unit’s siren and signal the vehicles to move.

When the vehicles slowly moved, the officer continued in Peters’ direction of travel on Route 153. However, the officer lost sight of the Peters vehicle and eventually discontinued his pursuit.

Another township officer contacted Verizon Wireless, which “pinged” Peters’ cellular phone. Verizon notified police that his cellular phone last “pinged” near Grandview off of Bloomington in Curwensville.

Later, a Clearfield Borough officer called and reported that a female informed the vehicle, which Peters was driving, almost hit her own. At the time this allegedly occurred, she told police she was inside the vehicle with her two children and she was basically forced to travel off of the roadway.

Officers proceeded to the EconoLodge in Clearfield in an attempt to locate Peters. However, an employee advised officers that there wasn’t any record of Peters staying there.

Clearfield County Control contacted officers and advised a juvenile had information on Peters’ whereabouts.  Upon making contact with the juvenile, she alleged that Peters had grabbed her arm and forced her to get into the vehicle. She told police she was in fear that they were going to get killed or kill someone else due to the speed that Peters was traveling at to flee from and avoid police.

The juvenile told police she asked Peters to stop the vehicle multiple times and even to let her out. He allegedly refused to stop, she said. She advised officers that Peters was staying in a specific room at the EconoLodge with his mother.

Officers, along with Summerson, then went back to the EconoLodge in an attempt to locate Peters. An officer and Summerson went inside to attempt contact with Peters; an officer waited outside near the Ford Focus, which Peters allegedly used to flee and elude police.

A township officer took Peters into custody, and Peters was transported to the county jail. While transporting him, he continually apologized for his misconduct and advised he fled from police because he was scared.

Peters allegedly related he had observed Summerson, which caused him to get into the vehicle registered to his mother. He allegedly said it was an attempt to avoid Summerson because he was aware he violated his parole by leaving a halfway house.

Peters allegedly continued to describe the incident and advised he’d observed the officer with activated emergency lights. Peters allegedly ended his apology, saying: “I was just scared, man.”

Police attempted to contact the motorist whose vehicle Peters almost hit but she couldn’t be reached. The juvenile advised that she would cooperate and a second, teenage female was also in the vehicle with her during the pursuit. The juvenile said she could provide them with her name and information.

Police noted there would be continued attempts to collect information regarding the incident.

Man Accused of Stealing More Than $6K Worth of Jewelry

DUBOIS – A DuBois man has been charged with stealing more than $6,000 in jewelry from his neighbor.

Donald Robert Myers, 38, 59 Atlantic Ave., DuBois, was charged with a felony count of theft by unlawful taking by the Sandy Township police on Dec. 14 in connection with an incident on July 29.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Myers went into the Sandy Township police station and met with an officer. Myers stated that he thought he had “messed up.” He explained that a week ago, he had found some jewelry on his front porch. He said that he buys property from storage sheds and he believed one of his children must have found the jewelry in something he had purchased and was playing with it on the porch. He took this jewelry to Ben Rossi Jewelers and got $300 for it.

During the interview, he started to cry and told the officer that he got a call from his neighbor who said jewelry was missing from her house. He was very emotional, as he again told the officer that he messed up.

While the officer was meeting with Myers he got a dispatch call to make contact with the victim. He excused himself from Myers and called the victim. She told the officer that she had numerous pieces of jewelry stolen and she suspected Myers had taken it.

The victim explained that she and her family were out of town on a family vacation in July and she had made arrangements with Myers to check on the house and let her dogs out. When she returned, she noticed the jewelry was missing. She text-messaged Myers and told him she was missing jewelry. Myers then told her that it has to be there and he would help her look for it.

She became suspicious of Myers after she asked him a few times more about the jewelry. Myers either ignored her or was playing it off. On July 29 she text-messaged him again and asked for her jewelry back.

After a little while, Myers’ wife text-messaged the victim and asked her to call. When she did, she explained that Myers told her he found the jewelry under her bushes when he was cutting her grass. He had taken the jewelry to Ben Rossi and had cashed it in for $300.

The victim gave the officer a description of the stolen items. There were four diamond and gold rings and two set of diamond and gold earrings. The total value of the items she listed was $6,376.

After speaking with the victim, the officer went back to the interview room to speak to Myers. He confirmed the story of finding the jewelry on his porch. The officer advised him he had spoken with the victim and asked about Myers finding the items in the yard. He denied this and continued stating he found them on the porch.

The officer said he wanted to talk to Myers’ wife and Myers gave him her cell phone number.

The officer spoke to Myers’ wife who confirmed her story that he told her he found the jewelry under a bush at the side of her home. She told the officer it was a mistake and they would get them back.

The officer returned to the interview room and advised Myers he did not believe his story. Myers was then advised of his rights. Myers agreed to continue speaking with the officer.

When the officer pointed out that his story was not consistent with his wife’s story, Myers began to cry and kept saying he was sorry. He said he was trying to get the jewelry back.

He eventually stated that he was in the victim’s home taking care of the dogs when he saw the rings and earrings on a table. He admitted he took three rings and a set of earrings and sold them.

The officer met with John Rossi of Ben Rossi Jewelers, who confirmed Myers cashed in five pieces of jewelry for $300. Rossi turned over one set of earrings that the store still had in his possession. He stated he had already sent out the other pieces, but he would try to get them back. Rossi did eventually get back these pieces as well and turned them over to police.

The victim identified the items as the ones that were missing from her home. Only one item was not recovered; a diamond wedding band with a value of $600.

The preliminary hearing in this case is scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 22 in front of District Judge Patrick Ford at his DuBois office.
