Munson Woman Waives Hearing in Child Endangerment Case

CLEARFIELD – A Munson woman has been accused of not supervising and caring for a young boy she was babysitting.

Alesia Marie Cusick, 24, has been charged by Trooper Brian A. Elensky Sr. of the Clearfield-based state police with felony endangering the welfare of children and misdemeanor recklessly endangering another person.

Cusick waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during centralized court at the Clearfield County Jail. Her bail has been set at $5,000 monetary.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred the afternoon of Sept. 28 on Old Turnpike Road, near Hardscrabble Road, in Morris Township, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed with the office of Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling.

Upon arrival on-scene, Elensky interviewed a male who stated his girlfriend, Cusick, was babysitting the boy. However, he said at some point, he wandered away from the residence on his own. He didn’t have any idea as to how long the boy had been gone.

Elensky then interviewed a female who was inside an SUV on Old Turnpike Road. She said she’d observed the young boy standing on the roadway without any shoes and wet pants. He was reportedly “afraid and crying.”

She said she stopped her vehicle and approached him because there weren’t any adults around. She contacted state police and comforted the two-year-old boy by holding him until the trooper’s arrival.

Elensky summoned another trooper and a Children & Youth Services worker to assist with the incident. He went to interview Cusick, who stated she was left to babysit the boy by his mother.

She said she put him in a bedroom while she and her boyfriend sat in the living area of her trailer.  She said the boy must have left through a window without her knowledge; the trooper, however, observed the window, which was closed.

Elensky asked Cusick if she had closed the window to which she replied “no.” He went outside and found the window was approximately six feet or higher from the ground. Elensky told Cusick that he didn’t believe the boy could have closed the window himself.

When Elensky advised Cusick she would be facing charges, she became upset. She commented she’d already had her own children taken away from her by CYS.

Beccaria Man Accused of Burglarizing Mo-Valley H.S., Stealing Student Driver Vehicle Waives Hearing

CLEARFIELD – A Beccaria man has been accused of burglarizing the Moshannon Valley High School and stealing the student driver vehicle.

Samuel Jordan Bonsell, 28, has been charged by Trooper Dennis Peters of the Clearfield-based state police with felony counts of burglary, criminal trespass and theft by unlawful taking; a misdemeanor count of theft by unlawful taking; and a summary count of criminal mischief.

Bonsell waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during centralized court at the Clearfield County Jail. He’s currently incarcerated in lieu of $100,000 bail.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Peters was dispatched to investigate the incident at 10:21 a.m. Oct. 14. Upon arrival, he observed the damage that had occurred to the school’s front door keyless entry system.

During an interview, Assistant Principal Justin Fye said he came into the school around 9:30 a.m. to catch up on some items. As he approached the main doors, he discovered the key card sensor was pulled from the wall and damaged.

Once inside, he checked the security footage and observed a male attempting to break into the school. He said between the time he made the report and Peters’ arrival, he located additional security footage of the male inside the building.

Security video first showed the male arriving around 5:14 a.m. and checking numerous exterior doors. He was reportedly observed urinating beside the library exit and also pulling a wire from a wiring harness beside the doorway.

Unable to unlock several doors with the wire, he returned to the front doors where he pulled the key card sensor away from the wall. He then attempted entry through several other doors before going off camera near the band room doors.

The male reappeared on camera at approximately 5:46 a.m. inside the school. He exited from the auditorium and into the hallway by the gymnasium. He roamed around before entering the maintenance room where the key box is located and remained inside for several minutes.

When he exited at approximately 6 a.m., he walked toward the student driver vehicle. Minutes later he was observed driving off. Peters located four “student driver” magnetic decals on the ground, which he collected as evidence and to submit for forensic analysis.

At approximately 5:35 p.m., state police received a report that the stolen vehicle was unattended at a park in Irvona. Troopers were dispatched to its location and secured the vehicle for processing.

On Oct. 15, Peters spoke with Trooper Brian A. Elensky Sr., who was able to positively identify the male suspect as Bonsell. Two months earlier, he had performed an evaluation on him as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

Peters spoke with Trooper Andrew Mills, who was also able to identify Bonsell. Mills said a month earlier, Bonsell was involved in a traffic stop and was wearing the same hat as in the school security video. This information was confirmed by Mills’ partner.

On Oct. 16, Bonsell arrived at the Clearfield barracks for an interview. He claimed he had a “limited recollection” of the morning in question because he’d used all his methamphetamine and blacked out.

The next thing he reportedly remembered was waking up in the driver’s seat of a “strange” vehicle in an apparent park. He said he started to “freak out” and walked down the street, at which point he realized he was in Irvona.

Bonsell thought he went to Dollar General for a drink before walking to Coalport and later going to Altoona. He said he’d been “using hard” and blacking out without any recollection of past events.

Bonsell was then presented with a surveillance photo and video and reportedly agreed it was him inside the school.

Philipsburg Woman Accused of Receiving Drug Package Waives Hearing

CLEARFIELD – A Philipsburg woman has been accused of receiving a drug package in the mail.

Sydney Nicole Bowman, 19, has been charged by the Pennsylvania State Police with a felony count of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver and misdemeanor counts of intentional possession of a controlled substance and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bowman waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during centralized court at the Clearfield County Jail. Her bail has been set at $25,000 unsecured.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Aug. 1, 2017, state police received a report about a suspicious package at the West Decatur post office. An employee related a parcel had been received that originated from China.

The employee also said that the USPS didn’t have the addressee, Bowman, listed to receive mail at this post office box in West Decatur. The investigator observed there was a telephone number below the address and it was found to belong to a “Mr. Drews” in Nebraska, not Bowman.

Additionally, the investigator noted the word technology was misspelled in the company’s name in the China address, and the parcel was “heavily” taped and sealed completely. Its label indicated the contents were “rosin,” which is an extract of cannabis.

The same day, a postal employee contacted Bowman to notify her a package was received in her name but addressed to a post office box other than hers. She related she’d ordered the package prior to obtaining her own post office box and used the one listed on the package. Bowman indicated she would be down to pick it up.

A few minutes later, Bowman arrived and claimed the parcel. After she exited the post office, state police requested to speak with her. She asked what this was about and was subsequently advised it was believed there was a controlled substance in the package.

The investigator went on to say he believed there was sufficient probable cause to obtain a search warrant. Bowman asked what probable cause, the investigator asked for the package and stated he would show her.

He proceeded to point out indicators on the parcel and advised he intended to apply for a search warrant to open it. He explained if it contained illegal substances, she would be arrested; otherwise, he’d contact her and she would be able to retrieve it.

The investigator asked Bowman about the contents of the parcel and she claimed that she didn’t know what was inside. She said about two weeks prior, a friend had asked to use her post office box to receive a package.

When he pressed her about her friend’s identity, she said she wanted to speak to her friend and ask “her” what was in the package first. He told Bowman she was welcome to make the call, which she did not.

She said her friend told her she’d call when the package arrived so she’d know to go pick it up. However, she said it must have arrived earlier than expected. She said plans were for her to pick up the package and arrange delivery to her friend.

The investigator confirmed Bowman’s contact information and departed with the parcel. He then applied for and was granted a search warrant, at which point he opened it.

Inside he found a clear Ziploc bag containing a yellow, crystalline substance, which was consistent with the appearance of “Rosin.” The investigator didn’t attempt a field test and instead packaged it to be sent for analysis.

A laboratory report relative to the substance indicated that it was alpha-pyrrolidinopentiophenone (alpha-PVP), a Schedule I controlled substance. It weighed 98.80 grams, according to the affidavit.

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EYT) – Additional details were released on an altercation at New Bethlehem bar during which a Clarion County man’s throat was slit.

State police say 36-year-old Matthew Duane Atcheson of Brookville allegedly slit a New Bethlehem man’s throat early Sunday morning.

According to court documents, the following charges were filed against Atcheson on Monday, Oct. 29:

  • Criminal Attempt – Murder Of The First Degree
  • Aggravated Assault, Felony 1
  • Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
  • Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2 (two counts)
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Misdemeanor 2

He remains lodged in the Clarion County Jail on $250,000 monetary bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, with Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey C. Miller presiding.

According to a criminal complaint, around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, Trooper Derek Weaver of the Punxsutawney-based state police’s Criminal Investigation Unit was notified of a physical assault, which was possibly going to become a homicide investigation at Desperado’s Bar on Broad Street in New Bethlehem.

Weaver was informed that Matthew Atcheson had cut the throat of the victim.

Around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit responded to the scene. An excessive amount of blood throughout the bar was observed, and a black and gray handled folding “Buck” knife was seized and entered into evidence.

Around 1:30 a.m., a trooper interviewed a known woman at the scene. The witness, who is a bartender of Desperado’s, was working the night of the incident.

According to the complaint, the bartender reported that Atcheson had been in the bar several times during the evening beginning at approximately 7 p.m. She stated that due to Atcheson’s behavior, he had been asked to leave several times but continued to return. Atcheson had become argumentative when she refused to serve him.

The bartender said Atcheson became involved in a verbal dispute with the victim when he asked him to calm down, and a physical altercation ensued with his wife, therefore, Atcheson was told to leave.

She reported that Atcheson returned a short time later and continued to cause problems. She heard Atcheson make the statement: “I’m going to (expletive) stab you,” which was directed toward the victim.

According to the complaint, the bartender explained she heard an altercation near the pool table followed by patrons yelling for her to call 9-1-1. She then saw the victim with his hands covering a wound to his neck.

Around 2 a.m., Weaver interviewed a second witness. The second witness reported that he arrived at Desperado’s around 10:45 p.m., sat down at the bar and began to talk to the bartender.

He related that Atcheson was causing problems within the bar and the bartender told him to leave. Atcheson then got into a verbal altercation with the bartender and other patrons and refused to leave.

The second witness stated that Atcheson’s wife then attempted to remove Atcheson from the bar, and they became involved in a physical altercation. Atcheson and his wife then left through the back exit.

The second witness reported that Atcheson was kicked out of the bar a total of three times by the bartender before entering a fourth time.

The witness reported that Atcheson yelled at the bartender and then removed a knife from his back, left pants pocket. He noted that he noticed the knife in Atcheson’s pocket before Atcheson pulled it out and yelled “knife” to the victim.

He reported that there was music playing, and it was hard to hear; however, the victim heard him yell knife and turned to look.

According to the complaint, as the victim turned to look, Atcheson pulled the open knife from his back, left pants pocket with his left hand and then used the knife to cut the victim’s throat.

The second witness reported immediately observing an excessive amount of blood coming from the victim’s neck and indicated that he ran to assist the victim as Atcheson ran back out of the back exit of the bar.

The complaint notes that Weaver viewed video surveillance footage of the incident from within the bar, which confirmed the witness interviews.

According to the complaint, the video depicted Atcheson confronting the bartender before pulling an open knife with his left hand from his back, left pants pocket, then raising his hand with the knife toward the victim and going at the victim. The victim is then immediately observed holding his throat with other individuals approaching to aid him.

Atcheson was arraigned at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, in Miller’s office.

CLEARFIELD – A Morrisdale man accused of firing gunshots at his step-son during a domestic dispute has entered a guilty plea.

In March Leslie Wayne Conklin, 61, was charged by Clearfield-based state police with a felony count of criminal attempt/criminal homicide; two felony counts of aggravated assault; and misdemeanor counts of strangulation, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Conklin agreed to enter a guilty plea Friday, and his three-day trial, which was scheduled to begin Wednesday, Oct. 31, was cancelled, a court employee said.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, at approximately 8 a.m. March 13, Conklin’s step-son was leaving for work. His pick-up truck left its parking place and hit a car belonging to his mother and Conklin. It also hit their house.

Conklin sent numerous text-messages about the incident to his wife while she was at work. When she arrived home shortly after 4 p.m., he was still upset and “carrying on” about their car and house.

When the victim came home an hour later, he and his mother were discussing contacting insurance companies and the damages. She said Conklin came out of his room and made a few comments, but it wasn’t anything drastic.

However, Conklin came back out and began “saying stuff” to the victim. When he defended himself, an argument broke out between the two men.

Conklin grabbed the victim by the throat; he grabbed Conklin by the shoulders and shoved him. Conklin fell to the floor and when asked if he was OK, he told his wife he hit his head and had a headache. He went to his room.

The victim and his mother remained in the dinette area and continued talking. Conklin stepped out of his room and into the hallway; he began yelling at the victim again. The victim took a few steps toward him and the two argued.

When Conklin grabbed the victim by the throat for the second time, the victim “planted” him on the floor. Conklin’s wife believed her son might have given Conklin a “little shove,” but said she was behind him and didn’t see him hit Conklin.

She told the victim to get away and asked Conklin if he was OK. He said he hit his head and it hurt, but when she offered help, he screamed that he wanted to be left alone. She wanted to avoid further confrontation and retreated to the kitchen.

She told the victim she felt they should get out of the house because Conklin owned guns. She said the victim had already called the state police for Conklin choking him the first time.

The victim then made his way out to leave. She got her keys and went through the garage to her sports utility vehicle. She said that Conklin came out onto the porch and he had a .22 pistol.

She pulled out in the SUV and positioned it between Conklin and the victim. The victim was standing next to his pick-up truck.

Conklin reportedly fired two gunshots toward the victim. She said that he held the gun as though he would shoot again but then went back inside. The victim corroborated his mother’s account of the incident.

The victim said he could tell that Conklin was shooting at him and he didn’t believe any shots hit his truck. He also said he wasn’t injured when Conklin grabbed him by the throat, but the second time, it felt like he was being choked.

When a trooper transported Conklin to the Woodland barracks, he asked if he was going to jail. He commented that he couldn’t believe he’d lose his job over this incident.

He claimed the victim slammed him on the ground, and it prompted him to retrieve his gun for self-defense. He admitted to pointing the gun at the victim but said he never fired it.

At the barracks, Conklin was interviewed again and asked if his wife had any reason to lie. He said no and what she told troopers was probably the truth.

CLEARFIELD – A Morrisdale man has been accused of assaulting a two-year-old girl.

Ethan Jeremy Sperling, 23, was originally charged by Trooper Adam D. Cummings of the Clearfield-based state police with misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment.

However, he had a felony charge of aggravated assault (victim less than 6 and defendant 18 or older) added Wednesday at his preliminary hearing.

Sperling waived his case to the Clearfield County Court of Common Pleas for further disposition. His bail is currently set at $50,000 monetary.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the toddler’s mother contacted state police to report the incident at approximately 10:35 p.m. Oct. 21.

She said her now ex-boyfriend, Sperling, sent her text messages, telling her that he’d smacked her daughter’s bottom because she had an accident in the bathtub.

Her daughter had severe bruising and swelling on her bottom and back of her legs, she told state police. Cummings also observed the injuries on the back of the toddler’s legs.

CLEARFIELD – A Morrisdale man has been accused of assaulting and threatening two females.

Timothy Robert Slick, 34, has been charged by Trooper Douglas F. Mihalko of the Clearfield-based state police with two counts each of misdemeanor terroristic threats and simple assault, plus two summary counts of harassment.

Slick waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during centralized court at the Clearfield County Jail.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred Oct. 27 on Grassflat Avenue in Cooper Township, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed with the office of Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling.

The two female victims drove themselves to the Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, to receive treatment for their injuries they sustained when Slick allegedly assaulted them.

Mihalko received information via telephone call with a Rockview-based state trooper. He indicated the victims were having CAT scans, noting both had visible physical injuries.

Both identified Slick as the perpetrator and stated he’d also threatened to kill them, the trooper said. This, he added, was corroborated by the victims’ parents at the hospital.

Court documents indicated that one female victim has been dating Slick for approximately 2.5 years and they recently got engaged to be married.

Martin Could Spend Up to 12 Years in Prison for Bigler Twp. Burglary, Assault

CLEARFIELD – A Duncansville man could spend up to 12 years in state prison for entering a residence and striking a man.

Andrew James Martin, 34, was found guilty of burglary and assault charges for his actions on May 29 in Bigler Township.

According to testimony at the September trial, Martin was reported as a suspicious person crying outside the victim’s home.

Two state troopers responding to the call said he was acting erratic and wearing only basketball shorts.

The first trooper described Martin as going through a variety of emotions. Martin told them he was fighting with his wife, which was why he was at a nearby home.

After a background check revealed his driver’s license was suspended but he had no outstanding warrants, Martin was warned to stay away from the residence. His wife was notified that he needed to be picked up.

Feeling everything was under control, the troopers left the scene but shortly after, were called back to the home.

Martin had returned to the residence, argued with the resident and her brother, and then broken down the door.

The male victim brandished his gun and pointed it at Martin, but it misfired, according to reports.

Martin then punched and kicked the man until his sister pointed her gun at him, causing him to flee the home. Once outside, another man was able to get Martin on the ground and hold him until the police returned.

Prior to sentencing on Monday, the female victim told the court she will never forget the terror she felt when her door was kicked open and a complete stranger was standing there.

Martin apologized and said he was not in his right mind and he regrets everything that happened.

President Judge Fredric J. Ammerman commented that nothing Martin did made sense that day, so he was probably suffering a mental health problem or was under the influence of methamphetamine or bath salts.

Ammerman sentenced him to six to 12 years in state prison and ordered him to pay $3,800 restitution.
