HYDE – A Clearfield man is being charged with attempted homicide following an alleged stabbing incident that occurred Monday morning in Hyde.

Robert J. Bailor, 47, is also charged by Trooper Matthew Peacock of the Clearfield-based state police with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor terroristic threats and simple assault.

Sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., state police say Bailor – without provocation – started stabbing a 76-year-old man outside his Clarendon Avenue residence.

Bailor stabbed the victim two times in the back of his neck and three times in his stomach, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed with the office of Magisterial District Judge Mike Morris.

The victim was interviewed Monday by Trooper David Patrick at the Clearfield Penn Highlands Hospital. He said Bailor confronted him as he exited his vehicle and started swinging at his neck with a knife.

Patrick also saw apparent stab wounds on the victim’s stomach, which he photographed as evidence.

Bailor is currently incarcerated in the Clearfield County Jail, and has been denied bail. He’s scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 31 during centralized court.

Clearfield Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 2 Girls

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man is facing multiple charges for allegedly sexually assaulting two girls.

Justin James Centra, 39, was charged by Lawrence Township police with two felony counts each of aggravated indecent assault of a child, three counts of corruption of minors, as well as misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and terroristic threats.

He is currently housed in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

An investigation into the assault of a 12-year-old girl on Monday reportedly led to evidence that Centra had also sexually assaulted another girl repeatedly starting when she was 10 years old.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the first victim was staying overnight with a friend at Centra’s residence in Lawrence Township when she awoke around 3 a.m. because someone was touching her.

She saw Centra kneeling beside the bed. He was reportedly trying to get into her pants, touching her private area outside of her pants and rubbing her legs.  She said she tried to act as if she were still asleep and rolled over to stop him.

The girl was able to send a message to a nearby friend asking if her mother could pick her up and take her home. She told them to park up the street so Centra would not see them.

As she was putting on her shoes and running out of the home, Centra came to the door asking her to come back multiple times.

Police were able to obtain the messages between the victim who said she would explain later and her friend.

When the girl got home, her mother was awakened by their dogs barking and asked why she was home. She only said she never wanted to go back to that residence.

Eventually the victim told her mother what had happened and explained how she got home.  Her mother contacted authorities.

When the mother spoke with police, she stated that Centra has anger issues. She went on to say that some people are afraid of Centra and what he might do because he has firearms at his home.

Once the victim’s friend learned what had happened, she reportedly text-messaged the victim saying Centra had been sexually assaulting her for years.

The victim’s friend, now victim 2, was then questioned at the Child Advocacy Center in Clearfield.

In this interview, she stated that the first time Centra assaulted her was in December when she was 10 years old.  There were additional incidents of him touching her and making her touch him, according to authorities.

This victim reported he had been abusive to her for years and on multiple occasions would strike her, push her into a wall and throw things at her.

The criminal complaint notes that Centra had prior arrests for domestic incidents, one which involved victim 2 who had suffered a golf ball-sized lump on her head.

Centra’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.

DuBois Man Charged for Allegedly Injuring 4-Month-Old Child

DUBOIS – A DuBois man is facing charges for allegedly injuring his four-month-old child.

Dean Garrett Sulin, 29, was charged Thursday by DuBois City police with three counts of aggravated assault in relation to incidents occurring in January of 2018 at his residence.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, an investigation began after a representative from Clearfield County Children, Youth and Family Services contacted police regarding a suspected case of child abuse.

The victim had been taken by ambulance to Penn Highlands DuBois on Jan. 31, 2018 where it was discovered she had abusive head trauma or “shaken baby syndrome.”

When police questioned the attending physician, he said the victim had notable swelling in the frontal area of her brain, which was confirmed to be a bilateral subdural hematoma.

The last time the victim had been seen by a medical professional, was Jan. 28, 2018 for vomiting.  Hospital staff reportedly told police the parents “did not appear to be concerned about the welfare of the victim.”

Due to the severity of her injuries, the child was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

In an interview with investigators on Jan. 31, 2018, the victim’s uncle stated that Sulin had admitted to him that he had dropped the baby several times.

This witness had personally seen Sulin yell and aggressively shake the victim when she was crying, police said.

Dr. Jennifer Wolford at the Children’s Hospital indicated the child had signs of abusive head trauma and an older, previous instance of abusive head trauma.

An MRI showed the victim had retinal hemorrhages.

The details of her injuries indicated that she had been injured just prior to emergency personnel arriving at her home, the doctor concluded.

Dr. Wolford stated that the victim had life-threatening injuries upon admission to the hospital and was a “near fatality as a result of the abuse.”

She warned that if the baby were returned to that environment and the abuse continued, she could die.

In her interview with police on Feb. 1, 2018, the mother admitted to seeing prior injuries to the child after being in the care of Sulin including a cut and bruise to her bottom lip, a bruise on her buttocks, a bruise to the left of her stomach and on her forehead.

She stated that in the week prior the child had been sick; crying, vomiting, not sleeping and appeared to be in pain.

Police say she reported that Sulin was aggressive with the child, yelling and screaming at the victim when she cried.

She had seen him pick the baby up only by her arms and aggressively shake her while yelling “shut the [expletive] up” in the child’s face, according to the complaint.

His aggressive behavior with the child started when she was a month old and continued until she was taken to the hospital, the mother said.

She explained that on Jan. 31, 2018, she was at work when Sulin called to tell her EMS was taking the baby to the hospital. The child was reportedly in his care exclusively at that time.

When Sulin spoke with police in February of 2018, he said he was driving around with the child, looking for work when the baby vomited on herself.

He took her home, where she vomited again, this time on him.  Sulin told investigators that he laid the baby down while he took a shower to clean up.

When he returned to her, she let out a loud yell and went limp. Her head rolled around and her eyes rolled in the back of her head, and this is when he called EMS, he said.

Sulin confirmed the mother’s report that the child had been sick for a week, describing the same symptoms.

He reportedly admitted to dropping her in the bathtub, causing a bruise on her buttocks.

Police say he stated he was not fit to be a father and that he never wanted a child.

Both the reporting officer and hospital staff noted that while at the hospital, Sulin was seemingly more concerned about whether he would be in trouble for the baby’s injuries than the baby’s condition, according to the criminal complaint.

No preliminary hearing is scheduled for this case and it is listed in court documents as inactive.

COOPER TOWNSHIP – An area man is facing a felony robbery charge after he allegedly forcefully took an iPhone from a Cooper Township woman.

William J. Yost, 36, of Mill Hall is also charged by Trooper Christopher Wilson of the Clearfield-based state police with misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking and two summaries.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling, and housed in Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Yost will appear for a preliminary hearing during centralized court Oct. 21.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed at Nevling’s office, at approximately 5:44 p.m. Oct. 14, Wilson responded to a reported disturbance in the 1100 block of Maple Street, Cooper Township.

The victim said when she arrived home at 5 p.m., Yost began questioning her and grabbing for her iPhone 11, valued at $1,000. At one point, he took it from her hand, but she was able to get it back

She then put her hand in which she had her phone between her legs to prevent Yost from grabbing it again. However, he reportedly took the iPhone forcefully from her hand and left on his motorcycle.

After traveling a short distance, he returned, commenting to the victim that he wasn’t going to jail. He then drove away still in possession of the iPhone.

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man is being accused of having sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl in early July.

Darrin R. Thompson, 32, is charged by Clearfield Borough police with felony statutory sexual assault-11 years older; involuntary deviate sexual intercourse person less than 16 years age; sexual assault; and aggravated indecent assault-complainant less than 16.

He is also charged with felony corruption of minors-defendant age 18 or above; three counts each of child pornography and disseminate photo/film of child sex acts; intimidate witness/victim; and criminal use of communication facility, plus misdemeanor lure child into motor vehicle.

Thompson was arraigned Oct. 18 before Magisterial District Judge Mike Morris, and incarcerated in Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. He’s scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing during centralized court Oct. 28.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed at Morris’ office, the investigation began July 5 following a report of inappropriate social media messages, which had been exchanged between Thompson and the girl.

Following an officer’s review of the messages, he received permission to search the girl’s iPhone, and requested she be transported to the police station and Child Advocacy Center for an interview.

She said she met Thompson about a month earlier at a local race track, and they ran into each other again the following weekend. She said he asked for her SnapChat username, and they started talking daily.

She told police she knew Thompson was 32 years old, and that he was aware of her age as well. She said he had her over to his home, which was awkward the first time, and also had her send pictures of herself to him.

She said they went “away” about 20 times to Bilger’s Rocks or to abandoned places and tunnels. He also reportedly gave her a NOVO vape and they would smoke weed together.

She said she used a “fake friend” as an excuse so she could visit Thompson, and that on July 3, he took her to the races. Afterwards, they went back to his residence.

The girl said that Thompson kissed her and rubbed about her body. They also reportedly had sexual relations during the early-morning hours of July 4.

On July 9, police executed a search warrant on Thompson’s residence and seized his cellular phone. Both cell phones were taken to the DuBois City police station for forensic extractions.

The girl’s phone contained photographs she’d sent Thompson of her chest and buttocks. Both phones contained numerous pictures of them together, according to the affidavit.

Snapchat messages confirmed Thompson’s relations with the girl, police said, and when it was discovered by her mother, he asked her multiple times not to allow her mother to contact police.

When she said police took photographs of everything on her phone and knew they had sex, Thompson reportedly asked to speak with her mother to explain the situation and for the girl to clear out the whole conversation.

Thompson contacted the girl’s mother and sister, and reportedly admitted to having been hanging out with the girl and to having been with her on the night in question. He asked if they’d contacted police.

He also messaged his ex-girlfriend stating he was probably going to jail for hanging out with a 15-year-old girl at his house “all the time.”

Police viewed Thompson’s web history, which revealed searches on how to delete all SnapChat messages/account, if you can get into trouble for hanging out with a minor, indecent assault charges and magisterial district judge docket sheets.

CLEARFIELD – After a two-day trial in Clearfield County Court, a jury determined a Clearfield man was not selling drugs, but only possessing them.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Deputy Attorney General Dave Gorman for the Attorney General’s office while Irwin was represented by attorney Brian Jones.

John L. Irwin, 37, was charged with three felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, three misdemeanor counts of intentional possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as two felony firearm charges after he was located in a Lawrence Township residence along with methamphetamine, heroin, mushrooms, pills and a gun in January of 2019.

According to the affidavit, state parole agents with assistance from Lawrence Township Police investigated a report of Irwin who was wanted for violating state parole, being at a Hill Street residence.

When they arrived they found Irwin upstairs sitting on a cooler in a bedroom. Also in the room was Alen Erskine who lived there, Amber Johnston of Curwensville and a small child.

Near his location was a black box on a work bench that also had drug paraphernalia, a bag of suspected methamphetamine on it, included two cell phones and two notebooks with alleged drug sale information.

Inside the box they found a pistol with the serial number scratched off. Underneath the bench was a lock box that was bolted to the floor.

Johnston said the bolted lock box belonged to her and she voluntarily opened it for officials.

Inside was $2,330 in cash, 37 small bags of heroin, two bags of mushrooms, and several unknown pills. Johnston stated that all of these items belonged to Irwin, except some of the loose bills.

Irwin told a state parole agent that anything found in the bedroom was his, according to the criminal complaint.

After deliberating on Tuesday afternoon, the jury found Irwin guilty of possessing heroin, methamphetamine, Fentanyl and drug paraphernalia but he was acquitted on the felony charges involving delivery of the controlled substances and the firearm charges.

Irwin will be scheduled for sentencing within 60 days.

In connection with this case, Erskine pleaded guilty to misdemeanor intentional possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child in Sept. 2019 when he was sentenced to nine months to two years less one day in the county jail and one year probation.

Johnston pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of children, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in July 2019 when she was sentenced to 45 days to one year in jail and two years consecutive probation.

Restaurant Owners Charged with Failure to Pay Over $60k in Sales Tax

CLEARFIELD – A Hollidaysburg couple is facing charges for not paying over $60,000 in sales tax for their restaurant.

Sabrina L. Saldana, 36, and Armando Mendoza Saldana, 47, were both charged in late October with seven felony counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds by agents of the attorney general’s office. They were scheduled for preliminary hearings on Wednesday in Clearfield County Court.

The charges stem from their business activity from Jan. 20, 2016 to July 20, 2017 at their Mexican restaurant, Salsa’s Mexican Grill in Philipsburg.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Sabrina Saldana owned 85% of the business while her father was a silent partner with 15% ownership. She ran the business with her husband, Armando Saldana who was listed as the co-operator.

Records reportedly indicate that a total of $61,866.32 in sales tax that was collected during the fourth quarter of 2015 through the second quarter of 2017 was not paid.

The restaurants were under the name Salsa’s Mexican Grill II, LLP and involved three locations: Philipsburg, Columbia in Lancaster County and Annville in Lebanon County.

It was discovered that Sabrina Saldana previously owned and operated Salsa’s Mexican Grill, Inc. in Bedford which also had a sales tax liability.

Later she had a business known as Salsa’s Mexican Grill III, LLC for a mobile lunch truck in Hollidaysburg.

Initially with Salsa’s Mexican Grill II, LLP, an accountant filed the sales tax payments. This ended after the second quarter of 2016.

This accountant told investigators that she “instructed the Saldanas that they were required to make the tax payments.”

Instead the couple allegedly used the sales tax money to pay other expenses for the restaurants and for personal bills.

When Armando Saldana was interviewed in Oct. 2018, he reportedly admitted that the couple was responsible for submitting the sales tax forms and funds and that they decided to use the money for other things.

He also stated that he was unaware that it was a criminal offense to not file the forms and pay in a timely manner.

Armando Saldana told investigators that after the accountant was no longer responsible for paying the sales tax, she continued to advise them to pay the taxes but they refused to listen to her advice because they did not have the money.

Both Sabrina and Armando Saldana waived their rights to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during centralized court, sending the cases onto the court of common pleas for further disposition.

They are each free on $50,000 unsecured bail.

Local Man Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Mother and Refusing Her Medical Treatment

CLEARFIELD – A Rockton man accused of assaulting his mother and refusing to allow her to get medical treatment pleaded guilty Monday in Clearfield County Court.

Mitchell David Kohler, 33, was sentenced by Judge Paul Cherry to 305 days to two years less one day in the county jail for simple assault.

He was ordered to complete anger management counseling.

Originally he was also charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.

It was noted that he has already served his time and would be paroled from the county jail on Monday.

Currently Kohler is an inmate of state prison where he is serving a 24-month to five year state prison sentence for violating his probation by committing this crime. Court documents indicate he was on probation for a terroristic threats charge from 2018.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Nov. 12, 2019, police responded to a DuBois residence after Kohler’s sister reported that Kohler was giving their mother “a rough time” and they wanted him removed from the home.

When police arrived they knocked at the door and received no response. They then called Kohler and negotiated with him so they could be allowed inside to check on the welfare of the victim.

Once inside, police say they saw the victim laying in a fetal position on a love seat in the living room.

Initially she told police she had fallen. But after Kohler was taken to another part of the house, she reportedly said he struck her in the back and she was now having extreme difficulty breathing.

Because of the seriousness of the injury, it was determined that Kohler should be taken into custody immediately.

When officers asked him to turn around and place his hands behind his back he asked why and did not comply. He was then forced to the ground where he reportedly struggled with the officers as he was placed in handcuffs.

After the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, it was discovered she had suffered a fractured rib and a collapsed lung, according to the report.

She told police that she and Kohler were arguing when he pulled her off the couch and struck her in the back with his fist.
