Douthit Accused of Leading Police on High-Speed Chase

DUBOIS – A Reynoldsville man stands accused of leading police on a high-speed vehicle chase.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Patrick Ford May 29, Dustin L. Douthit, 29, 528 Sykesville School Rd., Sykesville, is charged by the DuBois City police with fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, driving a vehicle at unsafe speeds, reckless driving, criminal mischief and five summary traffic charges following an incident May 16.

According to the affidavit, officers were on patrol near South Brady Street and saw a blue Dodge Dakota traveling north on South Brady Street. The vehicle allegedly honked its horn at another vehicle and then did a U-turn in the middle of the road, passing the patrol vehicle again at a high rate of speed.

The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but it continued over the Sandy Bridge and accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 80-miles-per-hour, in a 35-miles-per-hour zone. As the officer pursued, he noted that the vehicle was allegedly swerving all over the road.

The vehicle continued south, allegedly accelerating to speeds over 85-miles-per-hour, driving erratically, making turns without signaling and going through intersections without stopping at the stop signs. The officer continued to pursue the vehicle and called for back-up. The vehicle allegedly attempted to turn onto Thunderbird Road, but it slid sideways, with its operator nearly losing control. The officer then discontinued the chase but located the vehicle the truck had honked at.

The driver allegedly told the officer that she was looking for her boyfriend, Dustin Douthit, who was driving the truck the officer had been chasing. As the officer was speaking to the driver, County Control reported that a Sandy Township officer had located a home owner on Thunderbird Road who reported a truck had allegedly left the road, trove over a culvert ditch, through the front yard and around to the back of the house.

As the truck traveled over the ditch, it “bottomed out” and damaged the yard. The truck also hit the ditch at a speed high enough to leave parts and pieces of the truck in the yard. The property owner allegedly told police that the truck left with its headlights off.

County Control then received a call from another resident on Thunderbird Road who said there was a blue Dodge Dakota truck parked in her yard near her garage. The caller told dispatchers that she did not know who owned the truck or why it was parked on her property.

When police arrived, they found the truck had damage consistent with the parts and pieces they found. The officer allegedly found a note on the vehicle’s windshield, which said “Dear Sir, I hit my truck in a ditch; I will get it towed as soon as possible. Thank you.” The vehicle was registered to Douthit and it was photographed and taken to the police impound yard.

The following day, police received a phone call from Douthit, who said he wanted to speak to them about the incident. When he arrived at the police station, Douthit allegedly told police that he was coming back to DuBois because he was looking for his girlfriend after they had been fighting.

Douthit allegedly told police he saw his girlfriend’s car near the Sandy Bridge, honked his horn as she passed him, then turned around and went after her. Douthit allegedly told police he saw the patrol vehicle behind him but didn’t want to go back to jail.

Douthit allegedly told police he had turned town Thunderbird Road and attempted to hide by turning into a yard. He said he didn’t know the ditch was there and hit it at a very fast speed.

Douthit allegedly said he then drove around the side of the house and was going to leave on foot. He said he saw the patrol car go past the house and attempted to drive the vehicle back on to Thunderbird Road but noticed the damage to the truck.

Douthit allegedly told police he drove the vehicle to another house and left it there before leaving on foot to call for a ride. He said he went back the following day and left a note on the vehicle so the homeowners would know that nothing was wrong.

DUBOIS – A vehicle chase ending in a scuffle with police has resulted in charges against a DuBois man.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Patrick Ford’s office May 30, Bob Allen Larson, 52, 113 E. Park Ave., P.O. Box 113, DuBois, is charged by the DuBois-based state police with aggravated assault, criminal mischief, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, disorderly conduct, harassment, driving a vehicle at unsafe speeds, careless driving, reckless driving and four summary traffic charges following an incident May 29.

According to the affidavit, troopers on patrol were contacted by the Punxsutawney-based state police who were in pursuit of a red Buick traveling north on Route 219 at a high rate of speed. The troopers were told that the suspect vehicle had run a red light and struck a state patrol vehicle.

The trooper then used his patrol vehicle to spin the suspect vehicle, which then came to rest near the intersection of South Brady Street and Washington Avenue.

The troopers were told that DuBois City police had arrived and were assisting with the driver.

When the troopers arrived, they saw the DuBois City officers attempting to secure the suspect, later identified as Larson. Larson was allegedly resisting, throwing punches and kicking the officers.

During the struggle, a metal smoking pipe containing residue, which tested positive for marijuana, fell out of Larson’s pocket and landed on the ground.

Larson was taken to Penn Highlands DuBois, where he was questioned about what had happened earlier that evening. Larson allegedly told police that he was traveling through Sykesville when he saw a patrol vehicle with lights activated behind his vehicle.

Larson allegedly told police he did not know why the lights were on and did not pull over, because he wasn’t doing anything wrong. He said the patrol car had tried to block him several times during the pursuit and allegedly told police he had been traveling about 90 miles-per-hour trying to “lose” the police car.

Larson allegedly told police his vehicle and a patrol vehicle struck each other near the Sandy Bridge and the troopers stopped him. Larson allegedly told police that while the troopers and officers were trying to place him under arrest, they tried to pull him out through the window, which made him mad and he threw a punch, which he believes hit one of the officers in the face. Larson allegedly said once he was out of the vehicle, the officers ripped his shirt while he was on the ground, so he began kicking at them.

The trooper who initiated the chase said that he had witnessed the vehicle driven by Larson make a turn on to Route 119 without using a turn signal and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The trooper said the vehicle continued traveling and he radioed for back-up. The trooper said while attempting to stop the vehicle near the Sandy Bridge, the driver continued through the intersection, striking the patrol car and continuing on until the trooper was able to bump the rear of the suspect vehicle, causing it to spin out. The trooper said as he and officers from the DuBois City Police Department attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, the driver began hitting and kicking them.

Fugitive of the Week: Theodore Wells (Provided photo)

CLEARFIELD –District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. has announced Clearfield County’s Fugitive of the Week for the week of June 8.

Shaw identified the fugitive as Theodore Wells, 27, of Highland Street, Dubois. Wells is wanted for failure to appear at a Criminal Pre-trial Conference held May 21.

On Nov. 18, 2014, Trooper Jason McKee of the Pennsylvania State Police, Dubois barracks, filed a criminal complaint against Wells. He charged Wells with driving under the influence of alcohol, M; driving vehicle at safe speed, S; careless driving, S; and occupant protection, S.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on March 28, 2014, state police at DuBois were dispatched to Highland Street, Brady Township, for a reported vehicle accident. Upon arrival state police observed a vehicle with extensive damage.

Upon making contact with the operator of the vehicle, identified as Wells, state police allegedly detected signs of impairment. Wells was then transported to Altoona Regional Hospital for treatment.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 19, 2014, at which time all charges were held for court. On May 21, Wells failed to appear for a Criminal Pre-trial Conference, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Wells is described as a Caucasian male standing 5 feet, 7 inches tall. Further, he is described as being bald with green eyes.

Anyone with knowledge of Wells’ location is asked to call Clearfield County Crime Stoppers at 800-376-4700. All calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential.

5 ways to not freak out on a plane

$

0

The seats are too small, the meals are nonexistent, and the people across the aisle have taken off their shoes and socks to share their stinky feet with everyone.

Not to mention that poor crying baby and the seatmate who wants to talk ad nauseam about his work in plastics.

It’s no wonder we’re all a little infected with air rage.

What is the weary traveler to do? If you’ve got enough room in your coach seat for yoga, that’s awesome. Don’t kick anyone while you check out yoga teacher Alana Kessler’s in-flight class with CNN’s Rachel Crane in the video above — and Namaste.

If yoga’s not your style and you don’t have a Xanax prescription, here are more ways to survive short- and long-haul flights.

Frequent traveler Arabella Bowen, editor in chief of Fodor’s Travel, recommends combining strategies for greater impact. And yes, she flies coach 98% of the time, so she knows your pain.

“Noise-canceling headphones, an iPad loaded with a favorite TV series or recent documentaries and a window seat are essential ingredients to my remaining calm,” Bowen said. “I sit down, plug in and tune out.”

Create a buffer. Noise-canceling headphones are an excellent way to block out chatty seatmates, jet engines and crying babies. Old-fashioned foam earplugs can also dampen the din a bit. Or queue up your favorite movies, television shows or music on your portable device.

Make your captivity count. You pretty much have to stay put in flight. Why not make the most of that stillness by practicing loving-kindness meditation? Check out Barbara Fredrickson’s book “Positivity,” or use Headspace’s guided meditation app on your smart phone to keep yourself calm.

Prayer also brings peace to some fliers. “Artist’s Way” author Julia Cameron writes prayers out for each step of flight: the takeoff, the turbulence and the landing. A fearful flier who wrote a book about managing her fear, she even prays for the courage to start packing.

Treat yourself. You’ve sacrificed enough for a low airfare. Why not invest in some trashy magazines, a lovely biography or the latest New Yorker magazine? Add a window seat with a view, those noise-canceling headphones, snacks and a special drink, and it sounds almost delightful.

Some airline loyalty programs offer a complimentary alcoholic beverage to members, even in coach.

Just don’t overdo it: Alcohol has fueled many an air rage incident, and it can dehydrate you more quickly in flight.

Maintain connections. It seems counterintuitive to keep up with the people in your life at 30,000 feet, but a flight does provide a good chunk of relatively uninterrupted time. Use your aircraft’s in-flight Wi-Fi connection to message or email with friends and family, preferably the calm people who can distract you. Or go old-school and put pen to paper in a letter to an old friend.

Set yourself up for a smooth trip. The seeds of air rage may be planted way before your trip, and you may be bringing a nearly fully developed case onto the aircraft. Sometimes it’s an eruption of the simmering stress of rushing to pack, arriving at the airport late, getting hung up in security and running out of time for your pre-flight rituals.

“People go nuts when they’re running late for a flight,” said veteran flight attendant Heather Poole, author of “Cruising Attitude: Tales of Crashpads, Crew Drama, and Crazy Passengers at 35,000 Feet.”

“And that just snowballs because then they don’t have time to grab something to eat in the airport, and they freak out on me when I run out of food in coach,” Poole said. “Or else they have to go to the bathroom and the seat belt is on but they get up anyway because it’s an emergency.

“When I remind them the sign is on, because it’s my job to tell them the sign is on, they get angry and storm back to their seat, and now I’m the bad guy who then runs out of tomato juice because there’s only five cans, making an awful flight a million times worse. ”

All because you didn’t have time to get a snack, buy your magazine and use the restroom before boarding the plane. Building in a little extra time can make all the difference.

DUBOIS – A DuBois man is facing drug-related charges following an incident June 4 on West Washington Avenue.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Patrick Ford’s office June 5, Matthew Wayne Pearson II, 19, 135 W. Weber Ave., DuBois, is charged by the DuBois City police with manufacture of a controlled substance, possession or distribution of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the affidavit, police were called to 618 W. Washington Ave. for a report of a person throwing rocks at a window and that the caller suspected drugs may be involved.

When officers arrived, they saw a man sitting on a bench at the house. The man, later identified as Pearson, allegedly told police that he was intending to visit a friend at the house, but that his friend did not appear to be home. Pearson allegedly told police he had spoken with his friend just before he arrived at the house.

While speaking to Pearson, the officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana. The officers also noted that Pearson had plugged his cellphone into an outlet on the outside of the house. Pearson was carrying a black and red backpack.

The officers asked Pearson if he had any drugs and Pearson allegedly took two plastic baggies containing a small amount of marijuana out of his pocket. The officers then learned that Pearson had a prior arrest for marijuana possession and placed him under arrest.

When the officers searched Pearson’s back pack, they found a box of plastic baggies, a scale, an unlabeled pill bottle containing two yellow pills, which were later identified as Hydrocodone, two rubber containers with marijuana residue, a glass jar containing marijuana, a pill grinder and a marijuana grinder.
