DuBois Man Pleads Guilty in Child Pornography Case

CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man facing child pornography charges for allegedly posing as a woman online to get photos of a teen boy has signed a plea agreement.

Jarrod Andrew Ross, 21, is charged with F3 child pornography-sexual abuse of children, and corruption of minors in relation to events that occurred in November of 2014. During jury selection Thursday, Ross agreed to plead guilty. He is scheduled to sentenced March 7, according to court documents.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, an officer from the Reynoldsville Police Department was investigating Ross, who allegedly had nude photos of several underage males on his cell phone. Ross was able to obtain the photos from the victims because Ross allegedly posed as a woman online.

While the officer was reviewing the photos, he recognized one of the juveniles and knew this victim lived in DuBois. He then contacted Pennsylvania State Police about it.

When an officer spoke with the victim in September of 2015, he remembered getting a friend request on Facebook from a girl named Lacey, who was a good-looking blonde woman about 18 or 19- ears old around the time of the crime.

He accepted the request and the two started talking. When “she” asked how old he was, he told her he was 16, when he was really only 15 years old at that time. They continued to send messages via Facebook and the conversation became sexual in nature.

“Lacey” sent him a topless photo and requested photos of the victim in return, he told police. The victim sent 17 photos of which six or eight were frontal nudes. After the fourth day of talking and sending photos, Lacey stopped responding to his messages.

He said he tried to figure out why she was not responding, but gave up and moved on, forgetting about the whole thing until the police contacted him. The victim was able to identify himself in the photos. He told police he was not aware that “Lacey” was actually a guy posing as a woman.

In his interview with police, Ross said he knew the victim. He also said that the victim knew he was a man.

He admitted they conversed on Facebook and their conversations were sexual in nature. He also admitted that they exchanged explicit photos and that the victim told him he was 16 years old.

Ross is facing additional charges in Jefferson County of F3 child pornography (five counts) and one misdemeanor count of corruption of minors. Jury selection for that case is scheduled for March 6, according to online court documents.

CLEARFIELD – After a preliminary hearing Wednesday, all charges were held for court against a Burnside man accused of threatening to kill three people and cutting through a door with a knife.

Thomas Paul Alan Baldinger, 26, has been charged by state police at Punxsutawney with three counts of terroristic threats and two counts of harassment. Bail has been set at $50,000 monetary.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, at approximately 3:50 p.m. Dec. 4, 2016, Baldinger was shouting at a woman about moving to another residence. He shoved a man into her, causing her to fall into a dresser and scrape her leg.

After he was punched in the face by the man, Baldinger allegedly tackled him and they started wrestling. The man suffered scratches on his left leg. At this point, another man showed up and pulled Baldinger off.  When Baldinger was released, he tackled the man again. The second man pulled him off again.

When the man released him this time, Baldinger left the bedroom. He allegedly commented that he was going to kill everyone in the house. He went downstairs to retrieve a knife. While he was out of the room, the woman and the second man locked themselves in the bedroom; the first man fled to an attic area connected to it.

When Baldinger returned to the bedroom, he allegedly began cutting through the door with a 12-inch kitchen knife and almost stabbing the man.  He was able to cut a 24-inch by 24-inch square in the wooden door.

The man backed from the door and allowed Baldinger to enter. Neither the woman nor the man observed the knife. State police said it was later determined that Baldinger had put it in the bathroom adjacent to the bedroom after the hole was cut in the door.

Baldinger demanded to know where the first man was at. He was told he’d already left. When Baldinger realized the state police had been called, he fled to a shed, located near the house, on the property.

Wallaceton Man Allegedly Found with Drugs, Money During Traffic Stop

BRADFORD TOWNSHIP – A Wallaceton man is facing charges after allegedly being found with drugs and a large amount of money during a traffic stop, according to court paperwork filed with the office of Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling.

Lowell T. Way, 52, has been charged by state police at Clearfield with four counts of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; firearms not to be carried without a license; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; DUI/controlled substance; and five summaries.

Way’s bail has been set at $100,000 monetary, and he’s incarcerated at the Clearfield County Jail. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 22 at centralized court.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, a trooper was on routine patrol Feb. 11 and traveling east on U.S. Route 322 in Bradford Township. He was stopped at a red light in the left turning lane at the intersection with state Route 970.

The trooper observed a black Dodge Stratus stopped to the right of his patrol vehicle. It was extremely close and partially in his lane of travel.  When the trooper looked at the driver, later identified as Way, he appeared to be disoriented.

He also observed Way put in eye drops. The trooper was aware that cannabis users often put drops in to reduce redness that it causes in their eyes. He also observed several objects hanging from the rearview mirror that clearly impaired Way’s view.

The trooper waited for the vehicle to proceed straight on Route 322. He turned on his emergency lights to traverse through traffic and catch up to the vehicle. He initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Castelli Truck Wash.

When he approached the vehicle, the trooper immediately noticed a red straw with one end burnt in between Way’s legs, a long foil strip at his feet and a butane torch in the center console, according to the affidavit.

The trooper said Way’s eyes were very glassy, he was distracted and disoriented and he was uncoordinated with handling his cellular phone. He never provided the trooper with his registration but did provide his driver’s license and insurance card.

When the trooper asked Way about the straw, he tried to conceal it. He eventually handed it over to the trooper. Upon examination of the items, it was believed Way used the straw to inhale smoke from hash oil by using the butane torch to heat the foil containing THC hash oil.

The trooper asked Way to exit the vehicle and perform sobriety tests. While administering the field sobriety tests, he stopped and patted Way down for safety purposes. The trooper found a .22 magnum pistol in Way’s rear jean pocket, which was not loaded. Way was subsequently placed in handcuffs, and the trooper terminated the sobriety testing.

When back-up arrived at the scene, troopers searched Way’s vehicle. A search turned up a bag containing 287 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine; a bag containing 27 grams of suspected cocaine; a second bag containing 4 grams of suspected cocaine; two containers of suspected buprenorphine (12 total pills); a plastic container with a small amount of white powder inside it; a plastic box with suspected THC oil inside it; and a red and clear plastic bag with suspected cocaine (4 grams) and paraphernalia.

Paraphernalia included packaging papers, a bag containing a large amount of sharpie markers, a scale, tweezers, a razor and a metal marijuana pipe. Troopers also located an envelope containing an estimated $5,000 to $10,000 in U.S. Currency; an expired driver’s license was also found in the area of the money and drugs.

Way was taken to the Clearfield Penn Highlands Hospital for the purpose of a blood draw. He was then taken to the county jail. While transporting him, Way began talking to the trooper and apologizing for not telling him about the gun in his pocket. He also talked about winning a large amount of money gambling in multiple casinos over the past several days.

The trooper submitted all of the drug evidence to the state police crime lab for further analysis.

DUBOIS – A Kentucky man accused of selling a gun to a man involved with a local methamphetamine ring has been apprehended.

Charges were filed against Victor P. Elliott, 57, along with several others arrested after the “Operation Ice Storm” drug investigation in March of 2016. He is now incarcerated in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. His preliminary hearing on charges of firearm ownership (F3) and delivery firearm after 48 hours elapsed (M2) is scheduled for Feb. 24.

According to grand jury testimony in the investigation, Frederick Oddo, 46, formerly of Brookville, sold a semi-automatic pistol to Robert Selfridge, 36, who was bringing large amounts of methamphetamine into the area.

Oddo told officials that after his cousin and Elliott visited his home, Elliott left a pistol there. Because his girlfriend was concerned for their children’s safety, Oddo said he took the gun and later sold it to Selfridge for $200.

When an agent spoke with Elliott in July of 2015, he said he drove Oddo’s cousin from Kentucky to DuBois as a way to make money. He explained it was his plan to sell the gun that he purchased in Kentucky and make more money. Oddo paid him $200 for the gun, he told police.

Selfridge, 36, pleaded guilty in June 2016 to two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of firearms prohibited, firearm not to be carried, flight to avoid apprehension, default in required appearance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sentenced to a total of 13 years to 30 years in state prison. (For more on Selfridge’s sentencing, click here).

Oddo, 46, pleaded guilty in July of 2016 to person not to possess firearms (F2), and two counts of sales/transfer of firearms, (M2). He was sentenced to two to four years in state prison.

Over 30 people were arrested in March of 2016 for their connection with a drug ring that was selling methamphetamine and heroin in the area, according to previously published reports.

The arrests were the result of a year-long investigation that involved the DuBois City and Sandy Township Police Departments, the Clearfield County Drug Task Force, the District Attorney and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

– Indecent Assault of a Person Less than 13 Years of Age, Misdemeanor 1 (five counts)

He remains lodged in Jefferson County Jail on $75,000 monetary bail.

A sentencing date has not been set.

Details of the Case:

According to a criminal complaint, Trooper Carol Strishock, of state police at DuBois, interviewed a witness around 9:10 p.m. on June 12, 2016.

The witness stated that Bloom “told him that he saw (the victim) naked and ‘they did it.’” (The witness) told Bloom that he was going to tell (the victim’s) mother.

He then “got up to leave, and Bloom grabbed him and said he was going to punch him. He got away and got as far as the mud room when Bloom blocked the door.”

The witness and Bloom argued again, and Bloom allegedly repeated to the witness that he had sex with the victim. A known woman who was standing on the back porch of the house overheard the conversation.

Around 9:30 p.m. on June 12, Strishock interviewed (the known woman) who said she could hear the arguing and squatted down, so Bloom could not see her. She said that she overheard Bloom telling (a known man) that he had sex with (the victim), the complaint states.

Around 9:45 p.m. on June 12, Strishock entered the master bedroom of the residence where the incident occurred. She observed several used baby wipes in the trash can, which were confiscated and placed into evidence, the complaint indicates.

Around 5 p.m. on June 14, Bloom was interviewed at PSP DuBois. He was read his Miranda Warnings and agreed to speak to Strishock without an attorney. “At first, Bloom denied having any type of sexual contact with (the victim). When advised there was physical evidence, he admitted to having anal sex with (the victim) approximately five times over the past couple of months,” the complaint continues.

Bloom allegedly stated he knew the victim was only 12 years old, according to the complaint.

Wallaceton Man Waives Charges for Allegedly Being Found with Drugs, Money During Traffic Stop

CLEARFIELD – A Wallaceton man who was allegedly found with drugs and a large amount of money during a traffic stop waived the charges to court at his preliminary hearing Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.

Lowell T. Way, 52, has been charged by state police at Clearfield with four counts of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; firearms not to be carried without a license; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; DUI/controlled substance; and five summaries. Way’s bail has been set at $100,000 monetary.

Dylan Thomas Kline, 24, Clearfield, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia on Wednesday. He was sentenced to six months to three years in state prison.

A plea deal in the case against Mikhail Bloom Greenland, 29, Clearfield, with a probation sentence for charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy was rejected Wednesday.

Cherry asked for him to serve a minimum 90-day sentence. Greenland did not agree with that and withdrew his plea. His case will be added to the trial list.

Melanie Joy Hartman, currently an inmate of state prison, is scheduled to be sentenced March 9.

Stephanie Swanson, 28, Clearfield, is scheduled to be sentenced March 21.

Ethan William McLachlan, 25, Curwensville, failed to appear for his preliminary hearing in November, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, according to online court documents. A hearing was held in his absence with all charges sent on to the Court of Common Pleas.

These charges stem from a drug bust at 128 Clearfield St., in Clearfield in January of 2016.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, an officer was investigating the distribution of methamphetamine and Subutex out of a Clearfield Borough home. A search warrant was executed at the residence on Jan. 15, 2016 and controlled substances were seized.

When officers arrived, they made contact with Kline at the door. Officers asked for Murphy, who had an active warrant from Clearfield Borough police. Kline wouldn’t open the door and said Murphy was next door before running upstairs. Swanson then came downstairs and opened the door. She said Murphy was upstairs and officers were able to locate him.

It was determined Kline and Swanson both had warrants for their arrests. Kline was known to be dating Hartman, who was staying at this residence and also had warrants for her arrest. She was located in the attic, hiding in a corner under boxes and blankets.

During the search, officers allegedly found multiple items of drug paraphernalia, log books and meth. McLachlan had $848 when he was taken into custody, police said.

In his interview with police, Greenland said Murphy, Neptune, Hartman and Kline all stayed at the residence and paid rent. Kline had only been there for two weeks. Greenland said the night before the arrests that McLachlan did have meth.

Greenland admitted he had a prescription for Subutex, but he said he did not sell it. He also stated that Hartman goes to multiple doctors and has offered pills as payment for the rent, but Greenland said he did not accept them.

McLachlan told police that Hartman and Kline had meth on Jan. 14, 2016. He remembered two people coming to the residence to purchase Subutex.

The search of Hartman and Kline’s room uncovered a log book and $375, according to the criminal complaint. This book contained information on how many pills Hartman and Kline had to sell. The money was the proceeds from the sales, police said.

Kline, in his interview, told police it was McLachlan, who brought one gram of meth to the residence on Jan. 14. It was given to Hartman, Neptune, Murphy and Swanson, he said. Kline admitted that he himself had sold Subutex.

Hartman told officers she did not deal with McLachlan and she had only asked him for meth for her personal use. She said McLachlan showed up on Jan. 14, 2016 with about half to one gram of meth. When that was gone, he left and returned with two grams more. She admitted she, Kline and Murphy did all the meth.

Swanson came to her room to get some meth for her and Greenland. Hartman said she does not sell her Subutex but gives it to Kline to sell. She stated that Greenland also sells his Subutex.

Murphy told police that McLachlan brought meth to the residence on Jan. 14, 2016. He thought there was about two grams worth of the substance. He said it was for Hartman and Kline.

He also told police McLachlan bought an 8-ball (3.5 grams) in State College and sold some of it prior to getting back to Clearfield. The meth was distributed to Hartman, Kline, Murphy, Swanson and Greenland, according to Murphy.

He said Kline was the main seller of Subutex. When Murphy was searched at the jail, officers found he had concealed pills inside his rectum. He said he did it to keep from detoxing during his incarceration.

In her interview with police, Swanson admitted she was aware of the drug activity of the others. At first she denied knowing anything about the meth that was found under her side of a bed. In a later interview, she admitted it was hers and it was given to her by Hartman.

Swanson stated she was not a user and had only done meth once before. The amount the officers found, she said, was what was left of what Hartman gave her.

Neptune was questioned regarding what was found in his bedroom. He told police there was only a knife, and brass knuckles in the room. He said when he arrived home on Jan. 14, 2016, Hartman, McLachlan and Kline were in Hartman’s room cooking up some meth on a book. He estimated it to be one to two grams of the substance.

A review of the group’s various cell phones, revealed several drug-related messages.

McLachlan’s phone had many messages from him to other people setting up purchases of meth. He also mentioned needing to get rid of some “poop,” which is a slang term for synthetic marijuana.

Hartman’s phone had messages to people asking for money to pay for her doctor’s appointment and arranging drug sales. In some of the conversations, it is stated Kline was the one sending the messages to arrange the transactions.

McLachlan sent a picture to Hartman on Jan. 13, 2016 of suspected meth. Hartman then asked him to save her half a gram.

Murphy’s cell phone had text messages regarding the sale of Subutex, which is identified as being Hartman’s pills. There were messages from Greenland to Hartman talking about the selling of Subutex and “throwing in money” for their doctor’s appointments.

CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man accused of attempting to flee and elude police and burglarizing a camp waived the charges to court at his preliminary hearing Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.

Donald Lee Chesnet, 25, of DuBois has been charged by state police at Clearfield with burglary, criminal trespass, marijuana/small amount, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI/controlled substance, recklessly endangering another person, theft by unlawful taking, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, criminal mischief and 13 summaries. His bail has been set at $100,000.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, at 1:24 a.m. Feb. 7, troopers were traveling westbound on Interstate 80 in Bradford Township. A vehicle pulled ahead of their marked unit on the on-ramp westbound off of Route 970. When a trooper ran its registration, it came back as a “dead” tag.

The troopers followed the vehicle and activated the emergency lights after crossing the bridge at Exit 120 in Lawrence Township. However, the vehicle continued west before suddenly exiting the off-ramp at Exit 120. It continued across Route 879 back onto the on-ramp at a high rate of speed.

A pursuit of the vehicle ensued at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. During the pursuit, the driver never used any turn signals and failed to stay on the right side of the roadway until turning off at Exit 111. There, the driver crashed the vehicle off the west side of the off-ramp, the affidavit stated.

The driver fled on foot west while a passenger remained at the scene. State troopers from Clearfield and DuBois and officers from Lawrence Township, DuBois City and Sandy Township searched the area for the driver. He was later located at a camp on Fire Break Road in Pine Township.

He had allegedly broken the door jamb to get inside and stolen a pair of sweatpants. He was identified as Chesnet and taken to the Clearfield Penn Highlands Hospital for a blood draw. At the scene, Chesnet told one of the troopers that he’d smoked marijuana earlier in the day.

Chesnet also told the trooper he’d stolen the sweatpants from the camp he was in. He was wearing the sweatpants when he was taken into custody.

According to the affidavit, Chesnet didn’t possess a valid driver’s license or have financial responsibility for the vehicle. He also didn’t have the registered plate that belonged on the vehicle. His passenger had a green bag containing marijuana and drug paraphernalia that Chesnet threw at her when he exited the vehicle.

Robert Stephen Gavlak II, 26, currently an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of theft by unlawful taking before Judge Paul E. Cherry.

Gavlak was sentenced to 30 days to one year in jail and three years consecutive probation. He was fined $300 and he must pay $205 in restitution. He was also ordered to complete a drug counseling program.

It was noted that Gavlak has served 60 days in jail already. His attorney, Thomas Dickey stated that Gavlak will pay the restitution in full within 30 days.

The charge stems from a December incident at the Dollar General store in Houtzdale when Gavlak reached past the clerk into a register and removed cash.

The criminal complaint details the incident beginning with a report to police that a person robbed the store before fleeing on foot. When officers viewed surveillance footage they could see the actor was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up over a winter hat.

This male first paid for an item at the register, hung around and then went back to the register to purchase a small item. This time when the drawer opened, he dived across the register and removed cash.

The footage shows the cashier grabbing his arm with one hand and trying to shut the drawer with her other hand.

He said “let me in there or I’ll stab you,” she told police. After a while, the employee let go.

The man ran out of the store with only about $200, the report said. This sales clerk and a witness both identified Gavlak, who is a regular customer.

Three hours later Gavlak was taken into custody when he returned to his home.

During an interview with police, he confessed to committing the crime explaining he had a drug addiction. The money he stole he used to try to purchase drugs, he said.

In a phone call, District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. was questioned as to why Gavlak was not charged with robbery. Shaw stated that no one actually saw Gavlak with a knife. Also, the money was removed from the register and not given to him by the clerk.
