Ehrenfried Accused of Setting Dumpster Fires in DuBois

DUBOIS – A man who described himself as homeless has been charged with starting two dumpster fires in DuBois.

James Guy Ehrenfried, 22, was charged Thursday by DuBois City police with three felony counts of arson-reckless burning, two felony counts of risking a catastrophe, two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. He is lodged in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $20,000.

The charges stem for incidents Jan. 14 in the area of 100 N. Main St.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, when police responded at 10:20 p.m. they could see fire coming out of the top of a dumpster near the old Bamboo Garden and another dumpster behind Palumbo’s Meat Market. The fire chief advised the officers that both fires were intentionally set.

The dumpster near the Bamboo Garden was sitting underneath an overhang that came off the side of the building and was covering a refrigerator unit. The fire company was able to put this fire out without any damage to the building or structure near it.

The dumpster near Palumbo’s was near two parked vehicles that belonged to Palumbo. The fire company was also able to extinguish this fire before it spread. Both dumpsters suffered damage estimated to be $1,650, according to the complaint.

When an officer was able to view surveillance video from neighboring businesses, he saw a Caucasian male walk up to one of the vehicles parked near Palumbo’s. This male tried to open the driver’s side door, but was unable to do it. He then walked around the back of the vehicle toward Giant Eagle.

Later the male came back from the area of Giant Eagle. He stood behind the dumpster, reached in and then walked away. A few minutes later, both dumpsters were on fire. This male had bandaged hands.

On Jan. 18 police were dealing with Ehrenfried at City Park. It was noted that Ehrenfried resembled the man in the dumpster videos and even had one bandaged hand. He was placed under arrest for a violation at the park and taken to the police station.

When he was questioned by police, Ehrenfried said he was drinking beer the night of the fires and explained he does “goofy things” when he drinks. He said he was walking around because he is homeless.

He stated he walked through the alley from West Long Avenue toward Giant Eagle, which is between Palumbo’s and Mike’s Locksmith. When he got to Giant Eagle he realized he forgot his mother’s card that he was going to use, so he walked back.

As he went by the old Bamboo Garden, he walked to the dumpster, looked in it, pulled out his lighter and lit some cardboard on fire, he told police. He explained he didn’t think it would start a fire because he was just using a lighter. He mentioned the cardboard started to smoke as he walked away.

He then walked to the dumpster near Palumbo’s where he said he used his lighter again to light a plastic garbage bag on fire. He stated he thought it would just go out.

As he was walking away, he looked back to see both dumpsters were on fire and ran from the scene, he said. He commented to police that he didn’t expect the fire “to be that big.”

When police spoke with Ehrenfried’s mother, she stated that he told her during the early morning hours of Jan. 15 that he was the person who set the dumpster fires.

Ehrenfried’s preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. during centralized court in District Judge Pat Ford’s office.

CLEARFIELD – An Osceola Mills man will be spending time in state prison for threatening state troopers with a chainsaw.

Joseph James Komisar, 53, pleaded guilty Monday during colloquy court to two counts each of terroristic threats and simple assault in one case and two counts each of terroristic threats, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person and related charges in the original case that led to police responding to the Osceola Mills residence.

Judge Paul Cherry sentenced him to a total of nine months to four years in state prison.

According to the affidavits of probable cause, a woman called police Nov. 20 because Komisar would not leave her Osceola Mills residence. She told troopers that when she asked him to leave, he shoved her. After he went outside, he threatened her as he pounded on the windows and doors. He left and when he returned he had a chainsaw.

He entered the home by pushing in a window and yelled at the victim and a friend while the chainsaw was running. During this time, he threatened to kill everyone in the house. Both victims left the home and went to a neighbor’s house where they called state police.

After state police arrived on the scene, they told Komisar to leave. Instead of following their commands, he switched on the chainsaw, saying he would kill the two state troopers. He damaged a portion of the glass in the door and a blind with the chainsaw. Additional state troopers were requested.

Komisar yelled at the state troopers from an upstairs window while continuing to run the chainsaw that damaged the window blinds and cut several holes in the walls of the bedroom, according to the complaint.

They were unable to engage Komisar in conversation. State police said Komisar secured all the doors of the residence and appeared to be staying in an upstairs bedroom.

Entry was eventually made into the kitchen using the victim’s key. Once inside, state troopers saw Komisar at the top of the stairs holding a small knife. After a few minutes of conversation, Komisar placed the knife on the ground and walked down the steps where he was taken into custody.

During his transport to the police station, Komisar reportedly became irritated, threatening one of the state troopers and spitting on him.

Komisar has been in trouble for threatening people before. He pleaded guilty to terroristic threats and harassment in June of 2015, according to court documents. At that time, he was sentenced to six months to 23.5 months in the county jail.

CLEARFIELD – A former Reynoldsville man accused of not delivering grave markers to his clients pleaded guilty to theft Tuesday during plea and sentencing court.

Edmund A. Grenier Jr., 71, an inmate of state prison, pleaded guilty to felony counts of theft by deception in three cases.

He was sentenced to 42 months to seven years in state prison on each case by Judge Paul Cherry. The sentences will run concurrent with each other and with his current sentence.

In a fourth case, he pleaded guilty to theft by deception as a misdemeanor of the first degree. For this, he was given a concurrent term of 30 months to five years in state prison.

He was ordered to pay more than $109,000 in restitution.

Prior to sentencing, Grenier apologized to victims saying he was sorry this happened, but adding that he didn’t know what he could have done differently.

Cherry commented that Grenier violated the trust he had with his clients and as a result, some of their loved ones are without the monuments or markers their family members intended for them.

Over the past few years, Grenier has been charged several different times in both Clearfield County for Crown Crest Cemetery and in Jefferson County for Lakelawn Memorial Park for his failure to deliver items, such as grave site markers, granite bases, bronze memorial plaques, bronze vases and bronze scrolls to be installed in the cemeteries, according to published reports.

In January of 2015, he pleaded guilty in Clearfield County on two, separate cases to felony counts of deceptive business practice, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds and theft by deception. Prior to that on Aug. 27, 2013, he pleaded guilty to deceptive business practices.

He pleaded guilty to two cases with the same charges in Jefferson County.

Grenier is currently serving a state prison sentence of 25 to 50 years from a probation violation in Jefferson County that he was given in September of 2015.

According to online court records, in July of 2015, Jefferson County Judge John Foradora ordered that all accounts in the name of Lakelawn Memorial Park or Crown Crest Memorial Park be closed and reopened by attorney Jeffrey M. Gordon. The cemeteries were to be sold to pay the debts of the business.

Grenier’s ex-wife, Brenda Grenier, 58, is charged with 30 counts each of deceptive or fraudulent business practices, theft by deception and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds and two counts of theft by unlawful taking in one case and with one count each of deceptive business practices, theft by deception and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds in two other cases.

Brenda Grenier was identified as the secretary and treasurer of Grenier Enterprises Inc. as well as Crown Crest Cemeteries. In June of 2014, she withdrew $7,577.55 from the business account.

She admitted she took the funds because Edmund Grenier had stopped paying her a regular salary from the business. Brenda Grenier has not been associated with the day-to-day operation or maintenance of the business since 2011, according to the criminal complaint.

A bench warrant was issued for her after she failed to appear for a preliminary hearing in August of 2015. She was taken into custody in March and was extradited from Virginia.

She remains incarcerated in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of a total of $75,000 bail. A motion to reduce her bail in October was denied by Cherry, according to a previous report.

Romie D. Young III (Provided photo)

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield teen who has been accused of attempting to lure a 13-year-old girl through Facebook messenger to meet for sex waived his right to a preliminary hearing during centralized court Wednesday.

Romie D. Young III, 18, of Clearfield has been charged by Officer Zachary S. Cowan of the Lawrence Township police with two counts each of unlawful contact with minor/sexual offenses, corruption of minors/defendant age 18 or above and criminal use of a communications facility. Bail has been set at $50,000.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Jan. 12 Cowan was informed about a report made of an 18-year-old male, later identified as Young, having contact with the victim who was 13 years old.

When a family member became aware of a conversation the victim was having with Young, he reviewed Facebook messages. Messages started Jan. 10 and concluded after he found them on the victim’s phone around two hours before contacting police.

Several messages sent by Young were inappropriate, the family member told Cowan. Young was allegedly asking the victim to have sex with him, and he was aware of her age after asking in one message.

Young also allegedly set up a place to meet the victim to go to have sex Jan. 20. When shown the messages, Cowan observed several that incriminated Young; he asked the victim to come to the police station with the family member.

When the victim arrived at the station, Cowan had her Facebook logged into, and he printed the entire conversation between her and Young. He also captured screenshots of the conversation.

During an interview, the victim said she initially thought Young was joking. However, she said as the conversation went on, he continued to be persistent.

Cowan found several Facebook messages and emojis that were sexual in nature from Young. When the topic came up, the victim would change the subject. In one message, Young asked the victim for her age, he replied “… yea over four years.”

Later on, he allegedly asked the victim when they could “hang alone,” and he persisted with sexual messages/emojis. They arranged to meet Jan. 20, but he tried to move the date up.

Upon further investigation, Cowan found Young was on probation and had been arrested for previous sexual offenses.

During an interview with police, Young admitted that he’d talked with the victim about having sex and setting up a date, but they never did meet up. After giving consent, police searched Young’s phone and located a photo of the victim and messages sent to her through Facebook.

Cowan also found that Young sent the victim a message the day after a family member had seized her phone to try to continue contact with her. He allegedly admitted to “having thoughts” and being “attracted” to younger females.

Young told police there weren’t any other victims between the last and current case. His cell phone was seized as evidence.

In a second case, Emigh has been charged with conspiracy/criminal use of a communications facility and criminal use of a communications facility. Bail has been set at $10,000 unsecured in each case.

Joseph Nicholas Trotman III, 33, of Osceola Mills has been charged with conspiracy/manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; intentional possession of a controlled substance; and use/possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail has been set at $25,000.

Nicole Marie Bumbarger, 27, of Osceola Mills has been charged with conspiracy/manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; intentional possession of a controlled substance; and use/possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was changed from $25,000 monetary to $50,000 unsecured at her hearing.

According to the affidavit of probable cause in the first Emigh case, on Oct. 29, 2015, contact was made with a confidential informant who related he/she could purchase two grams of marijuana for $40 from Emigh.  It would occur somewhere in the Hawk Run area of Morris Township.

The CI was provided with $40, and an undercover trooper went with him/her. The trooper was provided with $100. The CI and trooper parked at Sutton’s Bar for Emigh to direct them to a residence.

Emigh came walking up Glastonbury Street. The CI noticed Emigh and they started to follow him in their vehicle until coming to a residence with a shed to the rear. Emigh had the CI and trooper follow him to the shed.

Once inside the shed, Emigh allegedly pulled out a scale and a bag of marijuana. Emigh weighed out two grams of marijuana for the CI, and he was paid $40 for it.

The trooper started to talk to Emigh. After a brief conversation, he allegedly weighed out another three grams of marijuana. He gave it to the trooper who paid $60 for it.

There was only a little marijuana left in the bag, so he gave it to the CI as a gift, the affidavit states.

The CI and trooper left the residence and the CI gave him the marijuana. The marijuana was field-tested and showed positive results at the state police’s Philipsburg barracks.

On Dec. 10, 2015, contact was made with the CI who related he/she could set up the purchase of two grams of marijuana from Emigh for $40. The CI told the trooper that Emigh would sell directly to him without he/she being there.

The trooper was provided with $100 and drove to Emigh’s residence. He went inside and up to Emigh’s room where he was given a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana.  He gave Emigh $40.

During a conversation, the trooper asked Emigh about getting a couple ounces of marijuana. Emigh stated he didn’t have any more at that time, but he would try to get some for him.

The trooper turned over the marijuana from this purchase, and it was field-tested at the state police’s Philipsburg barracks. It tested positive for marijuana.

According to the affidavits of probable cause in the other three cases, on Dec. 10, 2015, a controlled hand-to-hand purchase of two ounces of marijuana was set up for $800 at a Glastonbury Street residence in Morris Township. An undercover trooper arrived at the location to meet with Emigh.

Upon arrival the trooper observed a Chevrolet Suburban with a Pennsylvania registration parked across the driveway. The trooper also observed two, young children at a shed in the back yard. The trooper proceeded to walk toward the residence and met with Emigh.

Emigh started to walk to the shed and the trooper followed him. Emigh told the trooper he would be dealing with a male who related they needed to wait until “she” got out of the bathroom. The male proceeded to open a black backpack and removed two glass jars, which each allegedly contained an ounce of marijuana.

The male then removed a bag of marijuana from each jar and placed them on a work bench. He told the trooper they needed to wait until “the boss” got back, but he handed the trooper one of the bags for him to see what he was buying.

At this point, the female entered the shed and introduced herself. The trooper confirmed the price of $800 for two ounces of marijuana. She acknowledged that was correct, and they exchanged the money and marijuana.

The female counted the money and stated “we’re good” to the trooper. After a brief conversation, the trooper left the shed. He later turned the marijuana over to another trooper.

The marijuana was field-tested and showed positive results at the state police’s Philipsburg barracks, according to the affidavit.

State police checked the registration for the Chevrolet Suburban with PennDOT records. It was registered to Trotman. PennDOT records also included a picture of Trotman, and state police positively identified him as the male who pulled out the marijuana to hand to the trooper.

Upon further investigation, state police discovered Trotman was dating Bumbarger.  When her PennDOT records were accessed, state police believed she was the female who the money was given to. Bumbarger also has two children who matched the description of the ones playing around the shed.
